Face masks in anime are a common sight in anime. This should come as no surprise, as they are very prevalent in Japanese culture. With everyone feeling the effects of the covid-19 pandemic, I thought we’d take a look at some of the most memorable waifus wearing face masks. We included a special image gallery at the end, each one would make a great anime profile picture to show your support to mask up on social media.
There are many reasons why a character would wear a mask. Traditionally in Japan, not only the sick but the healthy wear masks because it helps prevent the spread of sickness. They can also come in handy as a disguise.
But without further ado, let’s jump into it. Here is a list of the top anime girls wearing facial mouth coverings!
1. Nino Arisugawa from Anonymous Noise
Nino really only cares about one thing, music. Growing up, she would sing with her childhood friend to help drown out the sounds of their parents arguing.
But one day her friend disappeared out of nowhere, and Nino stopped singing. All she could do was shout because she missed her friend. Unable to control herself, she started wearing a surgical mask wherever she went.
Later on in the anime she makes a new friend, which gives Nino new faith in her singing abilities. She remains hopeful that her singing can one day bring all friends together.
2. Mai Sakurajima from Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai
This is one of my favorite anime of all time. So it is a great honor that I get to add it to the list! The main female character, Mai, is a notable actress and model.
In the anime, Mai puts on a baseball cap and a white face mask. Not because she’s scared of Covid-19, but because she’s trying to disguise herself so she’s not recognized out in public. It’s a bit ironic that she is trying to act invisible with this setup, for those who’ve seen the show.
3. Gin Akutagawa from Bungo Stray Dogs
Gin is a member of Port Mafia, an underground criminal organization in Japan, also known as the “Night Wardens”. She’s a silent but deadly assassin, easily capable of getting the drop on someone from behind. Despite her quiet and stoic personality, she still manages to blush occasionally from embarrassment. Maybe that’s the reason for the mask?
4. Chiquita from Jormungand
If you’re a big fan of gangs, guns, and violence, you should check out Jormungand. Chiquita is a masterful bodyguard. And when you plan out an assassination, what better way than to decorate your mask with a skull pattern.
While not exactly the same as the one worn by Chiquita, this mask is quite similar:

5. Nutcracker (Mayu) from Tokyo Ghoul:re
Mayu is a ghoul tasked with capturing humans for an underground Gourmet society. She preyed on men by crushing their… Well with a nickname like Nutcracker, I’m sure you can figure it out. For those into the sadistic type, Mayu is your girl.
She also dyed her teeth black, so she can be quite terrifying when she gets up close and personal. But when she wears her casual outfit with a facial mask on, she’s quite a cutie.
6. Goryuu from Triage X
Triage X features a story about well-endowed, I mean well-trained nurses that work at a hospital. During the day, they spend their time taking care of and healing others, but at night they turn into mercenaries that target the “cancers” of society.
Goryuu isn’t the most popular character in the series, but as a sadomasochist ninja, she’s popular in my book. She wears a slender black mask, giving her mystique and keeping her safe during the pandemic!
7. Tier Harribel from Bleach
Hollows are a race born from human souls that don’t cross over to the spirit world. They always wear masks that are formed from the hearts they lost as humans, and help obscure their identity. Harribel is one of these hollows that removed their mask. She’s tactical, preferring to observe fights rather than intervene.
Her white skull mask covers the sides of her face, mouth, and down her neck covering part of her upper body.
8. Do-S from One-Punch Man 2
I know what you’re thinking. The answer is no, it’s not worth it. Sure, she’s a princess- but she is a monster princess. Do-S literally means Big Sadist.
But with an outfit like that, you probably knew she was a bit of a dominatrix. Her whip comes in handy to help others fall in line and follow her every order.
The mask itself is a bit intricate, but no denying it serves its purpose. Just be careful not to be around when she takes it off. Or you might get into some trouble on the other end of her elastic tongue.
9. Miko and Mako from Wonder Egg Priority
You can’t make an omelet without breaking a few eggs. If you’ve watched Wonder Egg Priority, then you know breaking eggs is something you’ve got to do. We’ve all had people in our life we would do anything to get back. Wonder Egg Priority is just that.
Miko and Mako hatched from eggs. Confused yet? There’s still time to watch the show. Long story short, when you hatch a wonder egg you are taken to the egg world. Where someone who previously died, hatches out of the egg and gets chased by monsters.
Miko and Mako both dye half of their hair and wear face masks as fanatical fans of their favorite idol. Oh, and they both entered a suicide pact following the death of the idol.
10. Ema Yasuhara from Shirobako
We all have fond memories from school. Ema was part of her high school’s animation club, and their video was such a success that it encouraged her to work for an animation studio after graduation. Shirobako is all about that experience of getting to do your dream job, but quickly finding out that work can be more stressful than it seemed.
Ema is a quiet and self-doubting type, despite her excellent work as a key animator. Later, she becomes a freelancer and gains more confidence as her friends cheer her on.
11. Smile (Yuki Hoshino) from Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop
Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop is an anime movie released globally on Netflix, that focuses on music and romance. It’s a bit minimalistic in nature, but that is part of its charm. Cherry, the boy, has trouble communicating his feelings, so he puts them into haikus. Smile, the girl, hides her face behind a mask.
Yuki Hoshino, or Smile, is a popular streamer about seeking “cuteness”. In reality, she has very large front teeth, so she wears a mask to keep them hidden.
12. Hina Fuuma from Aria the Scarlet Ammo AA
The real question about Aria the Scarlet Ammo AA is, who doesn’t enjoy seeing cute anime girls with guns running around like ninjas? Not only that, but they add in a splash of yuri elements. Sounds great right?
Hina has a smaller role on the show. Her story is that of someone dealing with poverty, working various jobs as “training” and helping pay for her studies.
13. Ryōko Asuka from Beelzebub
Red Tail is an all-female gang created to protect the girls at their high school. The group even has a strict no-boyfriend policy, where any member who starts dating has to leave the gang. Ryōko Asuka is a member of this gang.
She always wears a surgical face mask and rarely speaks.Ryōko is a minor character, so the anime never really goes into detail on why she wears the mask.
14. Libra from Fairy Tail
Chances are you have seen or at least heard about Fairy Tail. The series is full of epic adventures and odd jobs taken up by a guild full of goofy characters.
Libra is a Celestial Spirit and one of the 12 Golden zodiac Keys. Despite being very quiet and serene, she seems to enjoy others that kneel and obey her commands. Her outfit resembles that of a belly dancer, with her cloth mask matching her sign.
15. Aldith of Team Plasma from Pokemon: Black & White: Adventures in Unova
If you are out of the loop on Pokemon, Team Plasma is basically the new Team Rocket. Originally their plan was to liberate all Pokemon from their trainers. It turns out that the true leader had plans to rule over Unova, as the only trainer left with Pokemon.
Aldith is one of the recurring Team Plasma grunts that we see. Her mask matches the colors of her Team Plasma uniform. Her only known Pokemon is a Liepard.
16. Seiko Kimura from Danganronpa 3
Seiko Kimura is known as the Ultimate Pharmacist. After consuming one of her drugs, her appearance completely changes with her nails and teeth growing dramatically.
Seiko became conscious of how easy it was for people to read her facial expressions to tell what she was thinking. So she wears a respirator mask to hide her expressions and braces.
