Masks are one of the most iconic accessories in anime. They add an extra layer of mystery to some of the already most complex characters. They are often used to conceal someone’s identity. But they can also strike fear into the hearts of others.
Chances are, you are already thinking of a list of characters that wear masks. But how many of those are girls? Anime girls wearing masks seem to be rare. Or perhaps their fashion choice paid off and kept them in the shadows.
In any case, here is a list of the best anime girls wearing full-face masks!
1. Princess Mononoke (San) from Princess Mononoke
Chances are, you’ve heard about Princess Mononoke. San is the main character that was raised by wolves and thus acts like one. Her red mask is one of the most iconic items in the movie. San always dons her mask for battle.
2. Ririka Momobami from Kakegurui
Rirka Momobami is the Vice President of the student council at Hyakkaou Private Academy. A school known for its wealthy students who obsess over gambling.
Without the mask, she is revealed to be very shy. But wearing the mask gives her the confidence to be a stoic observer thanks to the anonymity it gives her.
3. Suika from Dr. Stone
Because of her “blurry-sickness”, Suika constantly wears a watermelon on her head. As you might expect, her strange appearance caused many in her village to exclude her.
In the Dr. Stone anime, Senku adds a pair of glasses lenses into the helmet to help with her poor eyesight.
4. Touka Kirishima from Tokyo Ghoul
You already knew that we would have to feature a Ghoul on this list. Tokyo Ghoul is an anime about these merciless creatures called Ghouls that can masquerade as humans by wearing masks.
Touka wears a rabbit mask while hunting to help conceal her identity.
5. Wilhelmina Carmel from Shakugan no Shana
Wilhelmina Carmel wears a headband that acts as the vessel for Tiamat. During battle, it changes into a mask with ten thousand ribbons that she manipulates to create giant fireballs.
6. Shizue Izawa from That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime
Shizu, also known as “The Conqueror of Flames”, is an A+ ranked adventurer and summoned from the Japanese world. She becomes possessed by Ifrit (a powerful flame spirit) and is given the Anti-Magic Mask to help suppress the control of the spirit.
7. Liz T. Blood from Blood Lad
Liz Tiffany Blood is the youngest in her family and is in charge of determining the punishment for those she considers guilty or innocent in hell. She is very shy and wears the mask just to hide from strangers.
8. Celty Sturluson from Durarara!!
Who can forget our favorite Dullahan? Celty Sturluson or more commonly known as the Headless Rider, is actually an Irish fairy in search of her stolen head. It’s sort of like a modern take on the headless horseman. She rides a motorcycle and wears a helmet as a head, instead of a pumpkin.
9. Rina Tennoji from Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club
Rina is a member of QU4RTZ, a music idol group. She often makes use of her sketchbook, the “Rina-chan Board” to help draw out her emotions, because she has difficulty conveying them on her face. This brings us to her mask, the “Auto Emotion Convert Rina-chan Board”.
Using her prowess with technology, she created the mask so she could wear it on stage or other activities that might require the use of both hands.
10. Makomo from Demon Slayer
When you think of Makomo, you think of patience. A rare find for Tanjiro Kamado, the main character of Demon Slayer, of someone who helps his training. She wears the mask, as it helps ward off bad luck.
11. Ulla Euleus Hecmatika from Sunday Without God
Playful and kind by nature, Ulla is a complete gem. But she innocently inherited the power of death and her mother’s dying wish for all humans to die. Her mask acts as a blindfold and a gag, to protect her princess nobility from the voices and eyes of commoners.
12. Ikeda Asaemon from Gintama°
Asaemon is an executioner that was adopted into the Ikeda Clan, whom she cares for deeply. She is also very skilled with a sword, being able to use the Kimoarai technique.
She tends to be emotionless unless it comes to being touched inappropriately. Asaemon then becomes violent and will cut down the molester. This also applies to anyone who touchers her skull mask, which she considers to be a very private part.
13. Akiza Izinski from Yu-Gi-Oh 5D’s
Aki Izayoi in the Japanese version, and is known as the Black Rose Witch. She poses the psychic ability to bring to life and control monsters and effects from the Duel Monsters cards.
Akiza wears the mask to duel under the alias of the Black Rose. During the Fortune Cup, they expose her as her true identity. Singer removes her mask, claiming that she no longer needs to hide her beauty from the world.
14. Noi from Dorohedoro
Holder of one of the rarest magic types, Noi has an elite level of healing abilities. She can use it on herself to heal quickly, making her resilient to physical attacks and virtually unkillable. The mask she wears was crafted by devils and increases her magical ability.
Because of her muscular build, she is quite androgynous and many cannot determine her gender until she removes the mask. The mask itself appears to be patched up with duct tape, like her tracksuit. This seems odd, as she has used her healing powers to heal broken or torn objects in the past.
15. Ein from High-Rise Invasion
In High-Rise Invasion, masks are code encrypted. This allows the mask to hack the wearer’s brain, forcing them to follow out a command. Ein wears a smiling mask, which has three commands: Despair, Murder, and Suicide.
She doesn’t say much, but who doesn’t love katana-wielding lolitas with pigtails?
16. Eagle Marin from Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac
Eagle Marin is a Silver Saint of the Aquila constellation and skilled at martial arts. Every female Saint must cover their face with a mask to renounce their female side. This was a symbol to denounce their womanhood. As we know from Greek mythology, Athena and pretty women never mixed well.
17. Liu Xuelan from Darwin’s Game
Liu Xuelan is an assassin of the Sunset Ravens. Because of her strength, she has been given the alias “Untouchable”. As the number 1 ranked player in Darwin’s Game she earns the title. The fox mask allows her to conceal her identity.
18. Ein from Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom

As the number one killer in Inferno, they gave her the codename “Phantom”. During one mission she wears a white carnival mask, similar to the Zahlenschwestern created by Scythe Master.
19. Mujika from The Promised Neverland 2nd Season
Mujika is a demon that religiously believes not to eat humans that come from the farms. In fact, she has never eaten a human. She even saved one orphan from a demon they were being chased by.
Mujika is actually quite beautiful and can easily pass for a human with a cloak on. The mask is part of the ensemble and could further aid in this disguise.
20. Arrow from Fire Force
Primary Vice Commander of the Knights of the Ashen Flame, or more commonly called ‘Arrow’. She is a third-generation pyrokinetic, with the ability to create a bow and arrow made of flames. Hence her name. Her ability also allows her to change the trajectory of her fire arrows during flight, making her a deadly long-range combatant.
She wears the uniform of the White-Clad, which is a burqa-like mask that covers her face. Many members of the White Hoods cult wear some form of white face covering to conceal their identity.
